Wild turkeys are becoming a striking presence throughout Metro Detroit, leading to surprising encounters and creative community solutions.
In April 2025, a Sterling Heights teen’s drive turned harrowing when a turkey crashed into his windshield on I-96 near Fowlerville Road. He escaped injury, but the incident highlights the rising number of human-turkey run-ins across urban Michigan.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reports that wild turkeys, nearly extinct a century ago, now flourish in every county, appearing in neighborhoods and city parks. Most locals enjoy seeing them, but aggressive birds have started chasing people and blocking streets.
DNR urges residents not to feed turkeys and to remove backyard feeders, recommending noise or water sprays to keep them away. Residents facing stubborn or dangerous turkeys are encouraged to seek DNR help.
