End of an Era: Dittrich Furs Announces Closure, Marking the Loss of a Historic Detroit Business

After 132 years, Detroit's oldest privately held business bids farewell, leaving a legacy in the New Center community.

After more than a century of serving Detroit, Dittrich Furs has announced its closure, marking the end of an era for the city's fashion landscape.

Established in 1893, Dittrich Furs has been a cornerstone in Detroit's New Center neighborhood, offering luxury fur garments and personalized service for generations.

The fifth-generation owners shared their decision to retire and close the business, emphasizing their gratitude for the community's support over the years.

In their announcement, the Dittrich family stated, "After much reflection, the Dittrich family has made the decision to retire and focus on the health and well-being of our family."

To commemorate their legacy, Dittrich Furs is holding a retirement liquidation sale, offering their extensive inventory at significant discounts until the store's final day on April 30.

Customers have expressed mixed emotions about the closure.

Longtime patron Lisa Wright shared, "I grew up in this area. I remember Dittrich because my mother bought a coat from Dittrich. In fact, I still have that coat."

Another customer, Veronica Baber, remarked, "It's hurtful because they've been here for a long time."

As Dittrich Furs prepares to close its doors, the New Center area continues to evolve.

Recent developments include the opening of Mission Cafe, a food business incubator launched by Wayne Metro and TechTown, providing opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

Additionally, the Future of Health initiative, a collaboration between Henry Ford Health, the Detroit Pistons, and Michigan State University, aims to support small businesses and foster innovation in the neighborhood.

While the departure of Dittrich Furs signifies the end of a historic chapter, the New Center community remains vibrant, embracing new ventures and honoring the legacy of longstanding establishments.

Dittrich Furs is located at 7373 Third Ave., Detroit, MI 48202.

Store hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
