Detroit Welcomes New Leadership as Mary Sheffield Is Sworn In as 76th Mayor

A Historic Milestone as Detroit's First Woman Mayor Takes Office

On January 1, 2026, Mary Sheffield was officially sworn in as the 76th mayor of Detroit, marking a historic moment as the city's first woman to hold this office.

The private ceremony took place at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, where City Clerk Janice Winfrey administered the oath of office.

Surrounded by close family members, Mayor Sheffield expressed her deep honor and commitment to serving the people of Detroit.

In her statement, she emphasized that this milestone represents progress, possibility, and the power of community.

She pledged to work towards an inclusive and equitable future for every neighborhood in the city.

Following the ceremony, Mayor Sheffield wasted no time in engaging with the community.

She visited the Detroit Fire Department’s Engine 27/Ladder 8 station and the Detroit Police Department’s 5th Precinct to personally thank first responders for their dedicated service.

Additionally, she spent time at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, serving meals to those experiencing homelessness and food insecurity.

These actions underscore her administration's commitment to service and community engagement from day one.

Mayor Sheffield's journey to this historic position began with her election to the Detroit City Council in 2013 at the age of 26, making her the youngest member at that time.

She later became the council president in 2022, demonstrating her dedication to public service and leadership.

Her election as mayor is seen as a significant step forward for the city, inspiring many, especially women and young girls, to pursue leadership roles.

As she embarks on her tenure, Mayor Sheffield has outlined key priorities for her administration.

These include investing in neighborhoods, enhancing public safety, expanding education and job opportunities, addressing affordable housing and homelessness, and fostering sustainable growth across Detroit.

Her proactive approach and immediate engagement with the community signal a promising start to her leadership.

Detroiters are optimistic about the future under Mayor Sheffield's guidance, anticipating positive changes and continued progress for the city.

Her historic inauguration not only marks a new chapter for Detroit but also serves as an inspiration for future generations.
