Coyotes in Metro Detroit: Safety Tips Every Dog and Cat Owner Should Follow

As coyote sightings increase in Metro Detroit, pet owners must take proactive steps to protect their animals.

Recent coyote sightings in Metro Detroit have raised concerns among pet owners.

Understanding coyote behavior and implementing safety measures can help keep your pets safe.

Understanding Coyote Behavior

Coyotes are naturally shy but can become bold, especially during breeding season from January to March.

During this period, they may venture into urban areas in search of food and mates.

It's crucial to recognize that coyotes are opportunistic feeders and may see small pets as potential prey.

Protecting Your Pets

To safeguard your pets from coyote encounters, consider the following tips:

Supervise Outdoor Time

Always supervise small dogs and cats when they're outside, especially during dawn and dusk when coyotes are most active.

Keep cats indoors and accompany small dogs during outdoor activities.

Use Leashes

When walking your dog, use a sturdy, non-retractable leash no longer than six feet.

This provides better control and reduces the risk of unexpected encounters.

Secure Your Yard

Install fencing at least six feet high and bury it at least 12 inches underground to prevent coyotes from jumping over or digging under.

Adding a mesh apron extending outward from the base can further deter digging.

Remove Attractants

Avoid feeding pets outdoors and remove any food sources that might attract coyotes, such as fallen fruit or unsecured garbage.

Clean up birdseed spills, as they can attract rodents, which in turn attract coyotes.

Responding to Coyote Encounters

If you encounter a coyote:

1. Maintain Eye Contact: Stand tall and make eye contact with the coyote.

2. Make Noise: Clap your hands, shout, or use a whistle to scare it away.

3. Do Not Run: Back away slowly while facing the coyote; running may trigger a chase response.

Community Vigilance

Stay informed about local coyote activity and share information with neighbors.

Reporting sightings to local wildlife authorities can help monitor and manage coyote populations effectively.

By understanding coyote behavior and taking proactive measures, Metro Detroit pet owners can help ensure the safety of their beloved animals.
