Sterling Heights Advances Plans for $10 Million Indoor Pickleball Facility |
City Council Approves Site Acquisition and Renovation for State-of-the-Art Sports Complex |
Sterling Heights is set to enhance its recreational offerings with the development of a $10 million indoor pickleball facility.
The City Council recently approved the purchase and renovation of a property at 35630 Van Dyke Avenue, near 15 Mile Road, to house this state-of-the-art complex.
This initiative stems from the voter-approved 'Pathway to Play and Preservation' millage passed in November 2024, which allocated funds for various community projects, including this facility.
The planned 37,000-square-foot center will feature nine official pickleball courtsâone more than initially proposedâsix tournament-ready table tennis courts, gathering areas with cafĂŠ space, meeting and party rooms, locker rooms, a zen room, and a nursing mothers' room.
Parks and Recreation Director Kyle Langlois emphasized the community's enthusiasm, stating, 'The community has been eager to learn where this facility would be located, and this site gives us the opportunity to deliver a premier space that combines accessibility, sustainability, and quality.'
Mayor Michael C. Taylor highlighted the project's alignment with the city's long-term vision, noting, 'It will not only enhance wellness and play but also strengthen our sense of community by providing a place where people come together, a guiding principle of our Visioning 2040 plan.'
The facility is expected to open in July 2026, offering residents free access to drop-in pickleball and table tennis play.
Programs, leagues, tournaments, and court rentals will require a modest fee, providing a low-cost alternative to private clubs.
A community listening and feedback session was held on September 30 at the Sterling Heights Community Center, allowing residents to share input on key amenities and features.
This development marks a significant step in meeting the growing demand for pickleball facilities in the region, reflecting the sport's increasing popularity among residents. |
