High demand for HVAC technicians offers a debt-free career path in Metro Detroit

In Metro Detroit, the demand for skilled HVAC technicians is on the rise, presenting a promising career path for individuals seeking stable employment without the burden of student loans.

Michael Lepinat, a service technician with C&C Heating and Air Conditioning, discovered his passion in the trades after realizing that a traditional career wasn't the right fit for him.

"I get to speak with people and work in a changing environment. I'm not stuck behind a desk all day, and I'm presented with different challenges each and every day that I get to overcome," Lepinat shared.

His experience underscores the dynamic and fulfilling nature of HVAC careers.

Nationwide, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates there are over 60,000 unfilled HVAC positions—a gap that industry leaders hope young talent can help close.

Justin Coker, the service process manager and maintenance field supervisor at C&C, emphasizes the company's commitment to training new talent, often fresh out of high school.

"Every person's a little bit different, but we want to make sure that when we're putting our technicians into people's homes, they feel confident, we feel confident, and the customer feels confident," Coker said.

His journey from maintenance technician to management highlights the growth opportunities within the field.

For those interested in pursuing this path, several local institutions offer comprehensive HVAC training programs:

Wayne County Community College District provides an associate degree in HVAC, covering system design, maintenance, and repair, preparing students for local and state licensing exams.

Dorsey College offers an HVAC Systems Technician diploma program, focusing on practical skills and including an externship for real-world experience.

HVAC U, LLC specializes in delivering training programs led by certified experts, catering to both individuals and corporations.

These programs equip students with the necessary skills to enter the workforce promptly, often within a year, and without accumulating significant debt.

As the demand for HVAC professionals continues to grow, these careers offer a viable and rewarding alternative to traditional four-year degrees.

For those ready to embark on this path, the opportunities in Metro Detroit are abundant and promising.
