DPSCD's 'Perfect Attendance Pays' initiative rewards students for consistent attendance |
Consistent student attendance is crucial for academic success and personal growth.
Recognizing this, the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) has reintroduced its 'Perfect Attendance Pays' program for the 2025-2026 school year.
This initiative offers high school students a $100 gift card for each five-day school week they attend without any absences, with the potential to earn up to $1,000 over the program's duration.
The program is set to run from January 5 through March 20, 2026.
In the previous school year, the program saw significant participation.
Nearly 5,000 students earned at least one $200 gift card for maintaining perfect attendance during two-week cycles.
Notably, over 2,000 students achieved perfect attendance in both cycles, demonstrating the program's effectiveness in encouraging regular school attendance.
Student leaders have emphasized the broader benefits of consistent attendance.
MiâKah West, a senior at Cass Technical High School and member of the District Executive Youth Council, highlighted that attending school daily fosters better networks, academic improvement, and real-world readiness.
She also noted that good attendance aids in strengthening discipline, resilience, and knowledge applicable beyond school and work.
Despite the program's success, challenges remain.
Superintendent Nikolai Vitti acknowledged that while the incentive has positively impacted attendance rates, systemic issues like transportation and housing instability continue to affect student attendance.
To address these barriers, DPSCD has implemented additional support measures, including mental health resources and transportation options, aiming to make consistent attendance more attainable for all students.
As the 'Perfect Attendance Pays' program continues, DPSCD remains committed to fostering an environment where students are motivated to attend school regularly, recognizing that each day in class is a step toward a brighter future. |
