Rescuer Brings Hope to Neglected Pets Across Metro Detroit

Local Woman's Dedication Transforms Lives of Abandoned Animals

In the heart of Detroit's west side, a compassionate woman is making a significant impact on the lives of neglected dogs.

Elizabeth Sammut has transformed vacant properties into safe havens for these animals, providing them with shelter, nourishment, and medical care.

"I have 15 on this block, and then we have six on another block," Sammut shared, highlighting the extent of her efforts.

She describes the area as a dumping ground for unwanted pets, witnessing at least one abandonment per week.

"They get out of their cars, put the dog on a leash, act like they’re walking the dog, let go of the leash, jump in their car, and they pull off," she recounted.

Through her dedication, these once-starving dogs now have full bellies and are up to date on vaccinations, with many being spayed or neutered.

Despite the challenges, Sammut remains hopeful about finding them loving homes.

"I think he would be adoptable. He seems like he’d be good with people and kids and whatever environment," she said about one of the dogs.

As winter approaches, her concern grows for those still on the streets.

"I just don’t want to see them out here starving, and it’s about to be winter. It’s about to be cold. They can’t survive out here," she emphasized.

Sammut collaborates with Detroit Animal Care and Control to ensure the animals receive necessary medical attention, including spaying, neutering, and vaccinations.

Her efforts extend to feral cats, demonstrating her broad commitment to animal welfare.
