Gator in the D? Michigan DNR Confirms Credible Belle Isle Sighting |
Unexpected reptilian visitor spotted in Detroit's Belle Isle Park |
Detroit's Belle Isle Park has become the center of attention following a credible alligator sighting confirmed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Lynn Blasey, a resident of Hamtramck and frequent visitor to the island, captured photographs of the reptile last Friday and promptly reported the encounter to the DNR.
In response, Belle Isle park staff investigated the area. While they did not observe the alligator firsthand, the photographic evidence, complete with geo-location data, led the DNR to deem the report both credible and consistent.
Out of an abundance of caution, the DNR is coordinating efforts to assess the area and determine appropriate next steps.
Visitors are reminded to maintain a safe distance from all wildlife, regardless of size. Though the reported animal appears small, all wildlife can be dangerous and unpredictable. If you observe unusual wildlife activity, please report it immediately to the Report All Poaching hotline at (800) 292-7800.
Additionally, the DNR addressed circulating social media rumors about a boa constrictor sighting, stating there is no evidence to support such claims, and no reports have been received or verified.
Releasing wild animals or pets into state parks is prohibited and harmful—to the animal, the ecosystem, and public safety. Non-native species can disrupt local habitats and pose risks to visitors and wildlife alike.
As the DNR continues its investigation, the community is urged to stay vigilant and report any further unusual wildlife sightings. |
