End of an Era: Metro Detroit Bike Shop Shutting Its Doors After 80 Years

Petri Bikes in Woodhaven to Close Permanently on November 29

After nearly eight decades of serving the Downriver community, Petri Bikes in Woodhaven has announced it will close its doors permanently on November 29.

The family-owned shop, located on Allen Road, has been a cornerstone for local cyclists since its founding in 1946 by Al and Joyce Petri.

Over the years, it evolved into a beloved gathering place for riders of all ages.

In a heartfelt statement, the Petri family expressed their gratitude: "This isn’t a story of loss, but one of gratitude. From first bikes and race tune-ups to charity rides and local events, we’ve shared the joy of cycling with generations of amazing people."

The decision to close comes amid challenges in the bicycle retail market and impending retirements within the family.

They noted that the current retail landscape has become increasingly challenging for the bicycle market, and many family members are planning to retire soon.

While the physical store will no longer be present, the legacy of Petri Bikes will endure in the rides, friendships, and cycling spirit that continue to thrive in Downriver.

As the shop prepares for its final days, the community reflects on the countless memories and contributions Petri Bikes has made over the years.

From providing quality bicycles and expert repairs to supporting local events and fostering a love for cycling, the shop's impact is immeasurable.

Residents are encouraged to visit before the closure to share their stories and bid farewell to a cherished local institution.

For those seeking alternative local bike shops, options include Cycle Connection in nearby Lincoln Park and J & T’s Kitchen in Detroit’s Piety Hill neighborhood.

These establishments continue to serve the cycling community with dedication and passion.

As the sun sets on Petri Bikes, the Downriver community honors its legacy and the countless memories created within its walls.

The spirit of cycling it fostered will undoubtedly continue to ride on.
