Detroit Unveils Joe Louis Statue Along Greenway Expansion

Detroit has taken a significant step in honoring its legendary boxer, Joe Louis, with the unveiling of a new bronze statue along the expanding Joe Louis Greenway.

 

This event coincided with the opening of a new trailhead on Grand River Avenue near Oakman Boulevard, serving as a gateway to the latest segment of the greenway.

 

The statue, titled "Outside the Ring," was crafted by local artist Austen Brantley and pays tribute to Louis's contributions to golf, highlighting his role in desegregating the sport.

 

During the unveiling ceremony, Joyce Barrow-Henderson, daughter of Joe Louis, reflected on her father's enduring spirit and his impact beyond boxing.

 

She emphasized that the statue symbolizes resilience and serves as an inspiration for all who face challenges.

 

The new segment of the Joe Louis Greenway adds two miles of trails between Joy Road and Intervale Street, featuring bike lanes, sidewalks, and enhanced landscaping.

 

With this addition, nearly six miles of the greenway are now complete, with another six miles anticipated to open by 2026.

 

Mayor Mike Duggan highlighted the transformative impact of the greenway, noting its role in converting blighted areas into beautiful, connected spaces that honor Louis's legacy both inside and outside the ring.

 

The project has received substantial support, including a $10.5 million federal grant awarded in January 2025 to fund construction between Woodward Avenue and Dequindre Street.

 

Additionally, a $2 million grant was allocated for planning and design at Lonyo Street between Patton Park and Romanowski Park.

 

These developments underscore the city's commitment to enhancing connectivity and recreational opportunities for its residents.

 

The Joe Louis Greenway is a 29-mile bike and pedestrian path designed to connect 23 Detroit neighborhoods with the communities of Highland Park, Hamtramck, and Dearborn.

 

As the greenway continues to expand, it stands as a testament to Detroit's dedication to honoring its history while fostering a vibrant and connected future.
