Simmons & Clark Jewelry Marks 100 Years of Service in Downtown Detroit |
Simmons & Clark Jewelry, a cornerstone of downtown Detroit, is celebrating a remarkable milestone: 100 years in business.
Established in 1925, the store has been a witness to the city's evolving landscape, offering timeless pieces that commemorate life's significant moments.
Third-generation owner Michael Simmons attributes the store's longevity to a steadfast commitment to family values and unwavering community support.
Reflecting on the store's history, Simmons recalls a catchy slogan from the 1950s: "Get on your mark, go to Simmons and Clark where you can shop in the dark for diamonds that spark."
Having spent much of his life at the downtown location, Simmons reminisces, "Been here since I was 6 years old and running around."
He observed his father and grandfather navigate the business through Detroit's economic fluctuations.
"Dad would call it the great rollercoaster ride. Detroit has its ups and downs," Simmons notes.
Despite challenges, the store has thrived, a testament to hard work and community loyalty.
"We work really hard at what we do," Simmons emphasizes.
The iconic sign of Simmons & Clark has been a downtown fixture for 70 years, symbolizing resilience and tradition.
"Names on the door, very fortunate for that. Understand and appreciate what I have," Simmons reflects.
Helping customers celebrate major life events, especially engagements and weddings, brings Simmons immense satisfaction.
"Makes me feel great that we can help them celebrate those certain moments," he shares.
With both his grandfather and father working into their 90s, Simmons shows no signs of slowing down.
He believes his predecessors would be proud of how he's upheld the family tradition.
"I think they'd be looking down and saying... you're alright kid," Simmons says.
Looking ahead, the business appears set to continue for another generation, as Simmons' daughter plans to eventually take over operations.
"And if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life, they say," Simmons concludes.
As downtown Detroit experiences a renaissance with developments like the Hudson's Detroit skyscraper and the revitalization of the Renaissance Center, Simmons & Clark Jewelry stands as a beacon of enduring family legacy and community support. |
