Boston-Edison's New Slice Spot: The Rectory Is Serving Up Pies

Historic Home Transformed into Neighborhood Pizzeria

Detroit's historic Boston-Edison neighborhood is welcoming a fresh culinary addition with the opening of The Rectory, a new pizzeria located at 1920 Atkinson Street.

Set to officially open on Tuesday, September 30, The Rectory occupies a building that once served as the rectory for the adjacent church-turned-café, The Congregation.

After sitting vacant for over 50 years, the building has been meticulously restored to preserve its original character, featuring historic windows, handcrafted furnishings, and unique stained-glass elements.

Co-founder Betsy Murdoch expressed the community-driven motivation behind the project, stating, "Bringing this building back to life felt like the natural next step. We kept hearing from our neighbors that they wanted more food options nearby, more places that felt like an extension of home. The Rectory is just that."

The menu boasts hand-tossed pizzas crafted from locally sourced ingredients, fresh salads, and options catering to vegan and gluten-free diets.

The beverage selection includes a variety of non-alcoholic choices, ensuring there's something for everyone.

The Rectory offers indoor dining, a three-season deck, a walk-up carry-out window, and a private event space, providing versatile options for patrons.

Murdoch is joined in this endeavor by business partners Antonio Luck, Mark Mondary, and Amy Peterson, all residents of the neighborhood.

The team emphasizes that The Rectory is more than just a restaurant; it's a revitalized space that brings life, music, and handmade pizza to an area that once faced blight.
