Berkley Police Alert Residents to ATM Skimming Device Discovery

Authorities Urge Vigilance Following Discovery of Skimming Device and Camera at Local Credit Union

Berkley, Michigan—Residents are being urged to exercise caution after a skimming device and a small camera were discovered at an MSU Federal Credit Union ATM on Coolidge Highway.

On October 12, 2025, the Berkley Department of Public Safety responded to an alarm activation at the credit union's drive-thru ATM. Upon inspection, security personnel found a "camera bar" designed to record PIN entries and a skimming device installed within the card slot.

Investigators believe the equipment was installed overnight and may be connected to similar incidents at other MSU Federal Credit Union locations in Oakland County. Detectives are collaborating with bank officials to determine if any customer information was compromised. Early findings suggest the device was active for only a few hours and likely did not capture any data.

Lieutenant Andrew Hadfield of the Berkley Police Department stated, "We're not aware of any victims that have been reported. We believe the device was only on there for a very brief period before it was located."

Authorities emphasize the importance of vigilance when using outdoor ATMs, noting that criminals continually adapt their methods to steal personal and financial information.

Safety Tips:

Inspect ATMs for unusual attachments or signs of tampering.

Cover the PIN pad while entering your code.

Report any suspicious devices or activity to local police immediately.

Authorities have released images of the recovered "camera bar" and skimming device to educate the public on identifying such equipment.

Anyone who notices suspicious devices or activity at a bank ATM is encouraged to contact their local police department.

FAQ:
