Metro Detroit Actors Shine in Locally Produced TV Series

Metro Detroit’s film industry is experiencing new energy as the upcoming TV series ‘Firing Line’ prepares to debut in May, offering a significant spotlight on local talent.

Filmed at various locations across the area, each episode had a $50,000 budget and was strongly supported by businesses in Garden City and Westland, highlighting community dedication to creative growth.

Firing Line marks a breakthrough for actors like Felicia Hage, originally from Moldova, and Taje Brandon of Ypsilanti, both seizing major career opportunities.

Directed by Detroit’s Young Ra and based on a novel by his wife AJ Brown, the series blends local faces with Hollywood names such as JD Williams and Keith Robinson.

As the region’s film community rebounds from the loss of tax incentives, series like this aim to give actors valuable experience and help Metro Detroit regain its place in the national spotlight.

From Flu to Slip-and-Falls: The Top Health Issues Affecting Metro Detroit This Winter

Metro Detroit is experiencing a challenging winter as rising cases of respiratory illnesses combine with weather-related hazards.

Influenza infections, driven by both A and B strains, are climbing fast, bringing symptoms like fever and severe fatigue.

Local health officials urge residents to prioritize flu vaccinations for greater protection.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 continues to circulate, mostly causing mild symptoms but still posing significant risks for older adults and those with health conditions.

Staying current with booster shots and basic safety habits remains essential.

Another concern is RSV, impacting young children and the elderly with potentially severe breathing problems, making it important to watch for signs and seek timely care.

Icy conditions have also prompted a surge in slip-and-fall injuries, causing more fractures and sprains than usual.

The community is encouraged to use caution outdoors and follow health guidance to reduce both illness and injuries this winter.

How to Prepare Your Car for Safe Winter Driving in Metro Detroit

As Metro Detroit faces another harsh winter, preparing your vehicle for icy roads and freezing temperatures is essential for safe travel.

Switching to winter tires offers better grip and control below 45°F, reducing risks from snow, ice, and potholes.

Monitor your tire pressure monthly, since cold weather can lower it by about 1 PSI every 10°F drop, leading to diminished handling if unchecked.

Check tread depth using the penny test; replace tires when necessary to ensure strong traction.

Maintain your car by inspecting the battery, wipers, washer fluid, and making sure all lights work for peak winter performance and visibility.

An emergency kit with blankets, snacks, a flashlight, and first-aid supplies adds security if you’re ever stranded.

Slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, and avoid cruise control for safer winter commutes in Metro Detroit.

Detroit's Winter Sunlight Loss: Impact on Mental Health and Coping Strategies

As Detroit’s winter deepens, residents face icy temperatures and far fewer hours of sunlight.

January is typically the city’s cloudiest month, with overcast skies covering the skyline about 63% of the time.

This lack of natural light can lead to mental health concerns, including Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which affects up to 40% of Michiganders.

Symptoms often include low mood, tiredness, and trouble concentrating — all linked to disrupted circadian rhythms and hormonal imbalances.

To fight back, experts recommend staying active outdoors and maintaining strong social connections with activities like group walks or ice skating.

Light therapy, regular indoor exercise, and professional intervention such as therapy or counseling can also support mental health during the darker months.

By adopting these strategies, Detroiters can protect their well-being and look forward to the arrival of spring.

Coyotes in Metro Detroit: Safety Tips Every Dog and Cat Owner Should Follow

Recent coyote sightings across Metro Detroit have left many pet owners uneasy.

Coyotes, typically shy, may become more visible and daring from January to March, their breeding season.

During this time, they often wander into neighborhoods, seeking food and mates.

Because these opportunistic animals might see small pets as prey, extra caution is needed.

Experts urge residents to closely supervise pets outdoors, especially small dogs or cats, during early morning or evening hours.

Leashing your dog with a sturdy, short leash and keeping cats indoors dramatically lowers risk.

Securing backyards with six-foot fencing — extended below ground — and clearing any fallen food or unsecured garbage helps deter hungry coyotes.

If a coyote appears, never run — stand tall, keep eye contact, and make loud noises to scare it away.

Staying alert and connecting with neighbors ensures better safety for both people and pets.

Rare Lake Erie Seiche Unveils Sunken Artifacts and Decades-Old Tales Along the Shore

A fierce winter storm barreled across the Great Lakes this week, sparking a rare seiche on Lake Erie that reshaped water levels along its western shores.

Residents in Luna Pier, Michigan, watched in awe as strong winds pushed lake waters aside, exposing vast stretches of lakebed for the first time in years.

Austin Lada and friends seized the chance to explore, unearthing a rusted Volkswagen axle—lost since 1969—and an old class ring thought to have been submerged for more than sixty years.

They also spotted a zebra mussel-covered snowmobile, which was recovered with help from CJ Witfoth.

The unprecedented scene drew curious locals and visitors, including Scarlett Hill from South Carolina, who called the event unforgettable.

By the next day, waters returned to normal, but the memories, and stories revealed, are sure to linger in the community.

Sensory Sprouts also offers take-home kits and holiday-themed sensory jars, making learning accessible to all families.

Jacobs aims to expand, inspired by enthusiastic local demand and support from the Jewish community.

Metro Detroit homeowners are facing frigid winter temperatures and rising heating costs, but practical steps can boost comfort and savings.

Smart thermostats like the Google Nest help optimize heating schedules — and with Consumers Energy donating 30,000 units, many local families can better manage costs.

Upgrading aging windows or adding thermal curtains and cellular shades cuts down on energy loss, while rebates from DTE Energy can reduce window replacement expenses, saving up to $500 annually.

Sealing drafts with new weatherstripping and caulk helps keep cold air out, especially around older patio doors.

Improving insulation in attics, basements, and crawl spaces delivers noticeable warmth; MiHER offers up to $20,000 for efficiency upgrades and DTE rebates up to $600 for insulation improvements.

Taking advantage of these solutions can make any Detroit home cozier and far more efficient throughout the toughest winter months.

Kids Bore the Cost. Can Detroit Make It Right?

Detroit’s students have long faced the weight of an underfunded and unequal education system, with the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) struggling against aging buildings and scarce resources.

A state-backed $760 million bailout in 2016 offered relief, but inequities endured, even as DPSCD’s per-pupil funding outpaced state averages in 2023-24.

Officials argue that these dollars still fall short, given the district’s deeper needs and stretched revenues.

Fresh hope arrived in August 2024, as Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s landmark $23 billion education budget delivered record K-12 investment — with new funding for mental health, student meals, and universal pre-K.

DPSCD will also benefit from nearly $20.5 million in grants for safer, more supportive schools.

Yet, as the district’s own $1 billion budget for 2025 launches new programs, uncertainty lingers over future state and federal support.

Whether these bold investments can finally close the opportunity gap for Detroit’s children remains to be seen.

No More Endless Reds? AI System Speeds Up Detroit’s Traffic Flow

Metro Detroit drivers could soon enjoy faster, safer commutes, thanks to a groundbreaking AI initiative led by the University of Michigan.

Researchers have developed a system that uses vehicle GPS data to efficiently retime traffic signals, aiming to reduce delays and traffic stops at busy intersections.

Traditional methods often required manual vehicle counts and infrequent updates due to cost and complexity, but the new approach analyzes regional traffic flow using anonymized data, saving time and money.

Initial tests on 8 Mile Road and 12 Mile Road delivered impressive results, cutting delays by up to 30% and stops by 40%.

Experts estimate signal optimization costs could drop from $5,000 to $2,500 per intersection.

This project, supported by $1.4 million in federal funding, promises safer roads and less congestion as AI and connectivity technology advance.

History to Go: Detroit’s Soul Food Tradition Comes Wrapped in a Shoebox

At Cornbread Restaurant & Bar in Southfield, Michigan, owner Patrick Coleman offers more than just a meal—he invites guests into a journey through history.

Since 2018, the restaurant’s shoebox lunches have honored Black travelers’ resilience during the Jim Crow era, featuring meals in boxes adorned with inspiring Black American stories and photos.

Guests enjoy classic dishes such as fried chicken wings, catfish, and macaroni and cheese while learning about historic figures like Ruby Bridges, Satchel Paige, and James Baldwin.

The idea came from Coleman’s family, who, during the 1950s, packed shoeboxes with food for Southern train journeys, facing segregation firsthand.

Now, schools and institutions—including Ohio State University—use these boxes as educational resources.

A special “Stop Racism” edition spotlights stories like Breonna Taylor’s and the Tulsa Massacre.

Through every shoebox, the restaurant weaves Black history into the community’s daily life, ensuring these vital stories inspire new generations.

The History of Livonia, Michigan: From Frontier Settlement to Modern Suburb

Livonia, located in northwest Wayne County, is a city shaped by nearly two centuries of growth and community spirit.

Originally settled in the 1820s by pioneers from New York and New England, Livonia began as a quiet farming community with scattered farms and small settlements like Newburgh and Quakertown.

Expansion of railroads and streetcars in the late 1800s brought market access and growth, slowly transforming the area beyond its rural beginnings.

After World War II, Livonia rapidly evolved due to Detroit’s booming auto industry, prompting its 1950 incorporation to preserve local identity.

The city became one of America’s fastest-growing suburbs in the 1950s and 60s, known for strong schools, new neighborhoods, and landmarks like Wonderland Mall.

Recent projects include the Senior Wellness Center and plans for a new mixed-use city center, reflecting Livonia’s continued investment in community.

Today, Livonia thrives as a welcoming, modern city rooted in its proud heritage.

The grand mansion at 4421 Woodward Avenue, known as The Whitney, stands as one of Detroit’s most storied and supernatural landmarks.

Originally built in 1894 by lumber magnate David Whitney Jr., and featuring cutting-edge design from Thomas Edison, the home’s luxury masked a succession of personal tragedies.

Both Whitney’s wife and sister-in-law passed away within its walls, and Whitney himself died there just years after its completion.

The mansion later served as a tuberculosis hospice, deepening its somber aura.

Restored by Richard Kughn in the 1980s and later purchased by Bud Liebler, the property now embraces its haunted history, especially on the third floor’s legendary Ghost Bar.

Guests and staff recount ghostly voices, moving shadows, and self-operating elevators in the elegant setting, making the Ghost Bar a uniquely Detroit destination where past and present mingle with every sip.

The Evolution of Sterling Heights, Michigan: From Farmland to Thriving Suburb

Sterling Heights, Michigan has transformed from humble farmland into a thriving, multicultural city — now the state's fourth largest.

Early settlers from New York and New England established farming communities in the 19th century, overcoming swampy land to grow crops that shaped the local economy.

By 1835, it was known as Sterling Township, its identity rooted in agriculture and the Clinton River for well over a century.

The post–World War II auto boom in Detroit brought new residential growth, turning farmland into neighborhoods and spurring road construction like Van Dyke Avenue.

In 1968, residents incorporated as Sterling Heights to manage rapid expansion and fend off annexation.

Industrial parks soon flourished, and waves of global immigrants enriched the area’s culture and vitality.

Recent achievements—like Redevelopment Ready certification and the Visioning 2040 plan—underline the city’s focus on safety, sustainability, and vibrant community life.

Sterling Heights continues to honor its roots while driving growth and embracing diversity.

The History of Wyandotte, Michigan: One of Metro Detroit’s Oldest Riverfront Communities

Wyandotte, Michigan is one of Metro Detroit’s oldest riverfront communities, tracing its origins to the early 1700s.

Once home to the Wyandot (Huron) Native Americans, the city’s early life centered on the Detroit River’s rich resources.

French fur traders expanded the area’s influence, paving the way for Wyandotte’s rise as an industrial powerhouse.

Incorporated in 1867, Wyandotte flourished with manufacturing giants like the Michigan Alkali Company, exporting essential chemicals worldwide.

The Detroit River shaped the city, lined with shipyards, docks, and lively neighborhoods expanding inland.

Recently, Wyandotte has balanced historic preservation with revitalization, transforming landmarks like the old McKinley Elementary School and investing $12 million in downtown improvements.

Today, residents and visitors enjoy unique shops, restaurants, public art, and a scenic, walkable waterfront, keeping Wyandotte’s local heritage alive while embracing modern growth.

Turkeys are in town — and they’re stirring up trouble.

Wild turkeys are becoming a striking presence throughout Metro Detroit, leading to surprising encounters and creative community solutions.

In April 2025, a Sterling Heights teen’s drive turned harrowing when a turkey crashed into his windshield on I-96 near Fowlerville Road. He escaped injury, but the incident highlights the rising number of human-turkey run-ins across urban Michigan.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reports that wild turkeys, nearly extinct a century ago, now flourish in every county, appearing in neighborhoods and city parks. Most locals enjoy seeing them, but aggressive birds have started chasing people and blocking streets.

DNR urges residents not to feed turkeys and to remove backyard feeders, recommending noise or water sprays to keep them away. Residents facing stubborn or dangerous turkeys are encouraged to seek DNR help.

Meanwhile, University of Michigan students are designing a robot to gently steer turkeys away from busy areas, blending technology with wildlife care for a safer coexistence.

Detroit's Oldest Folklore Legend: The Nain Rouge

Long before the city’s automotive boom or musical fame, Detroit’s identity was shaped by the mysterious legend of the Nain Rouge — a red dwarf said to be a harbinger of misfortune.

This local tale dates to the 18th century, when Detroit’s founder, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, reportedly encountered the red-skinned creature by the river after ignoring a fortune teller’s warning.

Soon after this fateful meeting, Cadillac suffered severe setbacks, giving rise to stories of a curse linked to the Nain Rouge.

Detroiters have continued to connect sightings of the Nain Rouge to citywide crises, like the Great Fire of 1805 and the 1967 riots.

Today, the annual Marche du Nain Rouge parade unites thousands in Midtown, blending performance art and satire as revelers symbolically banish the creature — reclaiming Detroit’s luck and highlighting its enduring, unique spirit.

In 1907, Russian immigrant brothers Ben and Perry Feigenson launched a Detroit soda legacy, creating the Feigenson Brothers Bottling Works from humble bakery roots.

They transformed cake frosting flavors like strawberry, fruit punch, and grape into vibrant sodas that quickly captured the city’s heart.

Early production was all hands-on, with batches bottled by hand and delivered by horse-drawn wagon, reflecting simple beginnings.

By 1920, Faygo emerged as the memorable new name, helping the brand grow as its bold flavors and affordability won over Michiganders.

The 1950s jingle “Faygo, Faygo, delicious Faygo!” became a Detroit classic, entrenching the brand in local culture.

Decades later, Faygo continued to innovate, launching unique flavors and, in 2025, debuting Super Pop and Bubble Pop! during a lively downtown Detroit pop-up event.

Tied to Detroit’s identity, Faygo bottles its pop locally and stands as The One True Original—a symbol of the city’s flavor and resilience.

Where Did the Colors Go? Why Metro Detroit’s Fall Foliage Is Falling Flat This Year

Autumn in Metro Detroit usually transforms local parks and neighborhoods with a vibrant display of red, orange, and yellow leaves, attracting nature lovers from near and far.

This year, though, the fall color show has been underwhelming.

Experts attribute the dull foliage to unusually warm and dry weather, which disrupted the usual leaf changes.

Instead of shifting to bright hues, leaves have lingered green or turned brown and dropped off early.

Despite the subdued scenery, Metro Detroiters haven’t let it dampen their autumn spirit.

Community members remain enthusiastic, flocking to cider mills, pumpkin festivals, and seasonal events.

Locals have noticed the lack of color but continue to cherish longstanding fall traditions.

Even with fewer brilliant leaves, the warmth and energy of autumn celebrations endure across the region.

Gator in the D? Michigan DNR Confirms Credible Belle Isle Sighting

Detroit’s Belle Isle Park is drawing attention after the Michigan Department of Natural Resources confirmed a credible alligator sighting supported by photographic evidence.

Hamtramck resident Lynn Blasey snapped photos of the reptile last Friday, providing geo-location data that park officials found consistent and reliable.

Although staff did not see the alligator in person, the DNR has launched a safety assessment and is planning the next steps out of caution.

Visitors are encouraged to keep their distance from all wildlife — even small animals can be unpredictable.

Anyone seeing unusual activity should report it to the Report All Poaching hotline at (800) 292-7800.

The DNR also dismissed rumors of a boa constrictor on Belle Isle, citing no credible evidence.

Officials remind everyone that releasing pets or wild animals in state parks is illegal and threatens both the ecosystem and public safety.

Simple Ways to Help Birds on Their Fall Journey

Every fall, Metro Detroit becomes a key crossroads for millions of migrating birds, as the Mississippi and Atlantic flyways intersect right here.

This natural convergence puts Detroit at the heart of essential travel routes for a wide range of bird species. Yet, urban hazards like bright lights and glass buildings threaten these seasonal visitors.

Simple precautions, especially turning off or dimming outdoor lights between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. during migration months, can cut bird-building collisions by up to 80%. Shielded lighting and window decals or screens further protect birds from deadly impacts.

The Detroit Bird Alliance leads local efforts, offering programs, events, and the “Safe Light for Safe Flight” campaign to educate the public.

Getting involved in conservation projects or making minor changes at home empowers residents to help safeguard these remarkable migrations above Metro Detroit.

Popular BBQ Chain Pulls Out of Metro Detroit and Another Michigan City

Smokey Bones has permanently closed its restaurants in Utica and Grand Rapids, Michigan, leaving only the Lansing location open statewide.

The decision follows a strategy by parent company Twin Hospitality Group Inc. to close underperforming sites and rebrand several others.

Nationwide, 15 Smokey Bones locations are being shuttered, with 10 already closed and five more set to follow by the end of the fiscal third quarter.

Twin Hospitality Group also plans to convert 19 existing Smokey Bones sites into Twin Peaks sports bars, known for their cozy lodge-like ambiance and broad beer selection.

These measures are designed to improve profitability and streamline business operations.

The closures in Utica and Grand Rapids end a familiar dining choice for locals, while the future may bring new eateries or concepts to these recently vacated spaces.

Barbecue fans can still visit the Lansing Smokey Bones for their favorites.

Detroit Residents Must Adopt 10-Digit Dialing by October 7

Detroit residents and businesses in the 313 area code must begin using 10-digit dialing for local calls starting October 7, 2025.

This update comes as the new 679 overlay area code is set to debut November 7, 2025.

Since April 7, a six-month permissive period has allowed both seven and 10-digit dialing, but after October 7, seven-digit calls will no longer go through.

Current 313 phone numbers will not change.

The 679 area code will be assigned to new numbers once the supply of 313 numbers is expected to run out in late 2027.

Residents are urged to update devices and contact lists programmed for seven-digit dialing, including systems like medical alerts and security.

Three-digit emergency numbers such as 911 and 988 will remain unaffected.

For details, reach out to your phone provider or check the Michigan Public Service Commission online.
