New Metro Detroit Speed Cameras: Where They’ll Be Active

Automated enforcement aims to enhance safety in construction zones

Metro Detroit drivers should prepare for the activation of new speed cameras in construction zones, a move designed to bolster safety for both motorists and road workers. These cameras will be operational exclusively in work zones and only when construction crews are present.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has outlined a phased implementation plan. Initially, the program will launch with approximately five speed safety camera locations, with plans to expand to over ten sites by 2026, including the addition of red light cameras. A comprehensive camera location study is scheduled for summer 2025 to determine optimal placements, considering factors such as community input, crash data, and equity. Drivers exceeding the speed limit by 10 mph or more in these monitored zones will face escalating penalties:

First offense: A written warning.

Second offense: A $150 fine.

Third offense: A $300 fine. ([clickondetroit.com](https://www.clickondetroit.com/news/local/2026/01/15/new-michigan-speed-cameras-where-when-theyll-be-active-and-list-of-punishments/?utm_source=openai))

The introduction of these cameras has sparked a range of reactions among local residents. Some express concerns over privacy and the potential for increased surveillance, while others acknowledge the necessity of protecting construction workers. State Representative Alabas Farhat emphasized the importance of this initiative, citing the high number of accidents and fatalities in work zones due to reckless driving and speeding. MDOT is committed to ensuring that all camera-enforced zones are clearly marked, with signage placed one mile ahead to alert drivers. The cameras will be active solely when workers are present, reinforcing the focus on safety during active construction periods. As the rollout progresses, MDOT plans to install cameras throughout the year, with full statewide implementation expected by 2027. This initiative aligns Michigan with 23 other states already utilizing similar technology to enhance work zone safety. Drivers are encouraged to stay informed about the locations of these cameras and to adhere to posted speed limits, especially in construction zones, to ensure the safety of all road users.
