Furniture Bank Launches 1,000 Beds Challenge to Combat Child Bed Poverty in Metro Detroit |
Nonprofit aims to raise $250,000 to provide 1,000 bed sets for children in need |
Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit has initiated the 1,000 Beds Challenge, a fundraising campaign targeting $250,000 to supply 1,000 complete twin bed sets to children lacking proper sleeping arrangements in Oakland, Wayne, and Macomb counties.
From November 10 through December 31, 2025, the organization seeks contributions from individuals, families, businesses, and community groups. Each $250 donation will furnish a child with a new mattress, foundation, pillow, and bedding, offering them the comfort and dignity of their own bed.
"It's heartbreaking that so many children and teens in our community don't have a bed," said Diane Charles, president and CEO of Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit. "Studies show that when a child has their own bed, they sleep, learn, and behave better."
Local businesses are supporting the initiative. Serta Restokraft Mattress Company will donate one twin mattress for every nine funded, and ABC Warehouse is promoting the challenge to its customers, donating all proceeds from its custom "Cozy Up for a Cause" holiday-themed loungewear.
Community members can participate by donating any amount to help reach the goal of providing 1,000 beds to children in need this holiday season.
