From Empty to Energized: Oakland Mall Reimagines Unused Space

Troy's iconic shopping center transforms vacant areas into vibrant community hubs

In an era where online shopping has led to the decline of traditional retail spaces, Oakland Mall in Troy, Michigan, is pioneering a transformation of its unused areas into dynamic community venues.

Following the closure of several department stores, including Macy's in early 2025, the mall has repurposed these vacant spaces to host a variety of events and attractions that resonate with the local community.

One notable initiative is the upcoming "Cakes & Mixology: The Giveback" event scheduled for December 20, 2025. This interactive workshop invites participants aged six and above to decorate mini cakes, craft holiday-themed mocktails, and engage in festive games. Proceeds from the event will support local charities and provide care packages to families in need, emphasizing the mall's commitment to community engagement.

Additionally, the mall has introduced the "Winter Wonderland Extravaganza", a festive attraction featuring hundreds of Christmas trees, millions of lights, and photo opportunities with Santa Claus. This event offers a magical holiday experience for families and visitors, further solidifying the mall's role as a community hub.

Under the ownership of Mario Kiezi, who acquired the property in 2022, Oakland Mall has been actively reimagining its spaces to better serve the community. Kiezi's vision includes enhancing the tenant mix, hosting family-friendly events, and creating a welcoming environment that reflects the diverse interests of Troy residents.

By transforming vacant retail spaces into vibrant community centers, Oakland Mall is setting a precedent for how traditional shopping centers can adapt to changing consumer behaviors and continue to thrive in the modern era.
