East Side Shop Recognized for Its Unique Approach and Community Engagement |
Detroit's own Coup D'état has been honored as one of the 50 Best Clothing Stores in America by a prominent national publication.
Located on the city's east side, Coup D'état stands out for its distinctive approach to fashion and deep community involvement.
Founded in 2019 by Angela Wisniewski-Cobbina, the boutique offers a curated selection of modern apparel, accessories, and lifestyle items from both global and local designers.
In 2024, the store relocated to the Lantern Building in Detroit's burgeoning arts district, Little Village.
This area was recently named one of TIME Magazine’s 2025 World’s Greatest Places.
Beyond retail, Coup D'état actively engages with the community.
In March 2025, the boutique hosted a retrospective exhibition honoring the late Detroit photographer Bill Rauhauser, showcasing his work that captured the city's essence throughout the 20th century.
Wisniewski-Cobbina emphasizes inclusivity, ensuring the boutique caters to diverse clientele across various price points.
She envisions Coup D'état as more than just a luxury shop; it's a space where everyone feels welcome.
Reflecting on the boutique's journey since its inception, Wisniewski-Cobbina shared insights into the challenges and triumphs of establishing a unique retail space in Detroit.
